TRAINING FOR STAFF

Dr. Kwaku Poku Asante graduated from the School of Public Health , University of Ghana , having obtained a Master of Public Health in September 2004. A Master of Public Administration course was offered to Mr. Jacob Saah. This is a two years modular programme taking place at Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) in Accra . Dr. Sam Newton and Mr. Charles Zandoh have also registered for Distance Learning PhDs with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Mr. Seeba Amenga-Etego was sponsored by the centre to study for his master's programme in computing in Westminster , UK .

The Centre also took on two national service personnel to undergo training and work with the Mental Health and Computer departments of KHRC. Various staffs were also privileged to attend refresher courses in South Africa , UK among others. A number of in house training sessions for the Laboratory staff were organised.

This had experts from Noguchi Memorial Institute imparting knowledge to our staff. Messers Jonas Asigbee and Charles Brown are worth mentioning in this regard. We also got lots of data management support from the Navrongo Health Research Centre. Of special mention is Peter Wontuo, who helped to set up the Kintampo Demographic Surveillance System and imparted training to the data mangers working on the system.

INTERNET CONNECTIVITY AND INTERCOM

The Centre is still enjoying Internet services 24 hours, seven days in a week. The service has greatly enhanced work in the centre since its inception especially with regard to our collaborators outside the country. It has also benefited the departmental Heads in their day to day running of their departments. The Centre improved local communication by installing more phone lines and an intercom. The Centre now boasts of dedicated fax lines and extended phone services to all offices including the security kiosks. The Directors bungalow has also been served with a telephone.

JUNIOR STAFF WASH ROOMS

The Centre awarded the construction of a modern wash room facility for the junior staff to Messer's Agyeeba Construction. This facility has both wall and floor tiles and has four WCs. There are two for the Ladies section and two for the gents. This facility together with the staff eating area made it necessary for the centre to upgrade its water system and storage facilities. The Centre therefore constructed a mega water storage stand with a huge poly tank of 10,000 gallons capacity to serve these facilities. A dedicated poly tank was also constructed to meet the expanding laboratory activities.

AUDITING

The Centre like all organisations hosted a team of Auditors during this period under review. The Audit work was carried out by Messers Edem Kofi Kugbey, William Sarbah and Susanna A. Codjoe all from the Ministry of Health Audit Unit Headquarters Accra.
