BASELINE MALARIA STUDIES IN KINTAMPO

Patterns and characterisation of Plasmodium falciparum infections, and morbidity in the Kintampo District of Ghana.

Investigators: KHRC-HRU: Seth Owusu-Agyei, Kwaku Poku Asante, John Gyapong, LSHTM: Daniel Chandramohan, Brian Greenwood

Background

The population of the Kintampo District in the middle belt of Ghana is one of the two districts under continuous demographic surveillance in Ghana . It has, in addition, most of the infrastructure required for testing new antimalarial drugs and vaccines as well as conducting malaria interventional studies. Determining the local baseline epidemiologic profile of malaria is important to embark on malaria intervention studies.

The main objective was:

To develop the Kintampo District for malaria intervention studies.
  • Specific Objectives were to determine:
  • incidence of malaria among children < 5 years of age
  • age-specific prevalence of malaria at different times of the year
  • seasonal variation of anaemia.
  • efficacy of anti-malaria drugs in the study area
  • seasonal dynamics of malaria infection
  • levels of malaria transmission
  • malaria parasite genotypes
