Background:

Dr Sam Newton is a Clinical Research Fellow at the Kintampo Health Research Centre. He completed medical school in 1993 with a BSc in Human Biology and an MBChB in medicine and surgery. After completing his housemanship at the Komfo Anokye Teaching hospital, he joined the Kintampo Health Research Centre in June 1996 as a clinician on the centre's first field trial the EPI plus study. It was a randomised double-blind, placebo-controlled, field trial that evaluated the safety and efficacy of high dose (200,000 IU) maternal vitamin A supplementation in the immediate post-partum period, given in addition to 4 small doses (25, 000 IU) delivered to the infant at the time they received their DPT/Polio immunizations.

He has carried out numerous field trials in malaria, iron and vitamin A as well as vaccine trials mainly in the area of polio, tetanus, hepatitis B and Haemophilus influenzae type b. In 2000 he was awarded a fellowship to undertake an MSc in Public Health in Developing Countries at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of London and completed in 2001 when he returned to the centre.

In 2004 he was admitted to the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine to do a PhD in Epidemiology as the first distance learning PhD student in Epidemiology at the school. His topic was "Randomised controlled trial assessing the impact of vitamin A supplementation on the immune responses to hepatitis B and Haemophilus influenza type b among young infants in Ghana". He completed in 2007 after his thesis had been adjudged to be excellent by his two examiners.

Dr Sam Newton has published extensively in international peer review journals mainly in the area of micronutrients, vaccines and research ethics. He has attended several international conferences both as a participant and as a presenter.

Interest:

His main interest is in combining clinical practice with public health and ethics and in trying to identify solutions to the public health problems, which we face in developing countries.
